The 11th Possibility

This is a prompt from that genius Rarasaur

Rarasaur writes:

The 11th Possibility is the idea that, regardless of data to the contrary, something unexpected and outside the realm of ordinary thought is always potentially around the corner.

“A coin is flipped 10 times, and in each instance lands on either heads or tails. But even after the normalcy displayed by the first 10 flips, the result of the next flip is still unknown. The coin could turn into a bird and fly away. The coin could land perfectly on its ridged edge. The coin could dissolve upon landing. It could defy gravity and remain stuck in the air. This is the 11th Possibility.”

Suggested Prompts:

•Share a picture of something that represents The 11th Possibility to you
•You walk into a dark room and flip the light switch on. Normalcy says that the light turns on. What are some possible 11th Possibilities?
•Consider, develop, or discuss the 11th Possibility in literature or film
•Write a poem about an ordinary scenario turning into something outside the realm of ordinary thought
•Share a story about the reaction that would occur if the 11th Possibility presented itself
•… or make up your own prompt related to the theme!

This is my contribution to the concept. Photo is courtesy of those folks at 9gag.

  1. It’s about time you’re back!

  2. Haha, love it!! I’ve seen a hundred uses for a boot, but never as a hat appropriate for political campaigning– this is definitely an 11th possibility! 😀 Thanks for sharing, and thanks for participating in Prompts for the Promptless!!

  3. So funny! Great response.

  6. Haha! Excellent idea. I work in accident investigations, and we see the 11th possibility all the time. Take the light switch idea – instead of lights coming on or going off, we get an electrical surge at the wrong moment and end up frying a panel, shocking a person, and in general causing momentary mayhem. Yep, the 11th possibility is not always pleasant, but it is usually very interesting.

    • My gosh, I’ll bet. One time I crashed because I saw the light green (it was!!!) Problem is that the people I crashed into also had green lights (2 other cars) Freaky because Blue Oyster Cult’s song “Don’t Fear the Reaper” was on too. :O

Do you have to do the investigations out in the field after they occur or do you do it in controlled environments? I can’t tell if your scary/funny example of the panel is an example of what might occur or if that happens in your labs. Eek!

      • Blue Oyster Cult rocks!
My example is real. Often we do interviews of the people, walk down the location the event happened. Sometimes we have to have equipment tested in a controlled environment by experts in the area to see what is wrong with it. The field work is the most interesting; writing the official report, not so much.

      • I agree even though they put the bad mojo on me that day. Or it might explain why I was distracted 🙂

Your job sounds fun in a macabre way. I had to go on one once when I worked at a law office. A big semi got run into. Pretty bad death 😦

      • Yeah. My day job is pretty mundane. But I am also with the local volunteer fire dept. and such accidents as that are not fun. They can be interesting in a clinical way, but not fun for anyone.

      • No, not fun. The part where you go through the testing is fun. I miswrote – I didn’t mean to imply that accidents are anything fun.
